What is Freeplane?

  • Freeplane is a powerful and free software for building mind maps. It is a redesigned version of the well known FreeMind, and is created by one of FreeMind's key developers. The software is written in Java, and supports any platform capable of running current versions of Java, including:
  • Freeplane is available in several different languages. The currently available translations are: Croatian, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and some other languages.
  • A "light" version of Freeplane called Freeplane for Windows Mobile is also part of the project and available for Pocket PC running under Windows Mobile OS.

Getting Freeplane

First make sure you have installed a recent version of Java, 1.5 or above.

To download Freeplane, go to the SourceForge page, and click on the "Download Now!" button.

To run, use the installer for Windows, the adapted distribution for Mac OS X, or simply extract the downloaded zipfile, and run the "freeplane.bat" (Windows) or "freeplane.sh" (Unix) file. Further instructions on installing under Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.) can be found here.
