Easy tools for making a quick demo video

For anyone interested in producing a video to share with other FP users, I am currently using a free tool that will meet basic needs.

Improbably titled as "Screencast-O-Matic" (http://www.screencast-o-matic.com), this simple browser application allows you to quickly capture voice and screen content in real time and save it as a simple video. The tool then allows you to upload the video directly to online storage sites such as YouTube or Vimeo, along with other options to export your video to the screencast-o-matic website or save it as a traditional video file on your desktop in several different standard video formats.

There is a Pro version of the software that, for a very modest annual fee ($15USD), adds in some really nifty editing tools in addition to the basic suite. While certainly not a full scale video editing platform, these tools are easily worth the price and allow you to insert, delete, voice over, add background, blur, enhance, etc. One of the best tools is the ability to divide your production into separate segments, recording the audio for each and then adding in the screen work separately. This is very helpful for a number of important reasons:

  • You now don't have to juggle the mechanics of running FP while trying to talk
  • If you mess up one of the segments you can simply re-record it without the need to redo the other segments that were okay
  • Once the audio recordings are like you want them, it's very easy to record the screen portion in real time in response to the audio

All you need to get started is a microphone and your computer. A computer headset gives better results than the standard cheapie microphone on most laptops that will also record unwanted ambient background audio.

Works great. Give it a try and show us how you use FreePlane in your own applications.
