Drop support for Formulas in notes and details?!

Drop support for Formulas in notes and details?!

Postby boercher » Wed Apr 02, 2014 10:36 am

When we first implemented formula support as in spreadsheet programs like

= 1 + 2

(which evaluates to "3") you could define formulas in

- node core (node text)
- attribute values
- details
- notes

(For an introduction into formulas see their wiki page. If you are interested in the original discussions see this forum thread.)

While formulas in node text and attributes found lots of applications support for formulas in details and notes silently went out of order before the release of Freeplane 1.2.

Given that no one complained about formulas in notes and details not working I suggest that we officially drop support for them.

Any comments?

Notes: no formulas is OK
Details: I tried to use formulas in them to count the pending tasks in a branch (I have a user defined style for them):
=node.find{ it.hasStyle("Pending Task")}.size()
at the end I use an attribute to doing this. I still think that details was a better place (better look and usability for the user)

just my opinion,

Ok, all do agree to remove support for formulas in notes.

Ok, you would like formulas in details but you found an alternative solution.

No one else in favor of formulas in details?

Without a lot of usage experience, I wonder if the ability to embed a formula into details for a summary field could be useful.

eg
If I have tasks with a duration field, then I can create an attribute 'TotalDuration': as
="The total duration is ${children.sum(0) {it['Duration'].num0}} weeks"

For a more user-friendly map, I could see this fitting in the Details, neatly below. One could sum up multiple fields quite neatly? It's a nice to have, and there may be more valuable uses of time though. There are workarounds though, as you said.

My $0.02
