How does "Show Intersection..." work?

How does "Show Intersection..." work?

Postby kunkel321 » Thu Nov 08, 2012 5:56 pm

I've been using the Show Icons Hierarchically feature, which is pretty cool. But how does the Show Intersection of Child Icons feature work? It's in the same menu area as the hierarchy option, so I assume it's related. It seems like, if a node has two sub-nodes, and each sub-node has the same icon, then the parent of them would be the intersection(?) Maybe it works another way though. I searched the documentation and Google--didn't find much.

EDIT: Note also that turning it on causes the hierarchically-shown ones to be hidden...

Google found an occurrence of the "Show Intersection Child Icons" topic here: http://freeplane.bzr.sf.net/bzr/freepla ... Ffreeplane
Apparently this was the only thing added at revision 1640, about a year and a half ago.

I'm gonna revive this thread because I just really really need to know....
Surly Dimitry knows! ;)
How does the menu command, "Edit > Icons > Show intersection of child icons" work?

The only place it's mentioned in the entire universe, is here on this thread, and here
383 HierarchicalIcons2Action.text = Show intersection of child icons
in the in the change log.

All it seems to do is break the "Show hierarchy" feature...

hi,

Edit->Icons->Show icons hierarchically:
internal (non-leaf) nodes get the union of the child nodes' icons

Edit->Icons->Show intersection of child icons:
internal (non-leaf) nodes get the intersection of the child nodes' icons

If this does not work, please create a bug report with a simplest possible (mind map) example.

BTW: I am wondering whether the two options shall be exclusive (only one of them ticked at a time).

Best Regards,
Felix

Thanks for the reply Felix!

Sorry for being dense--but I'm still not understanding the terminology.
In this image I have three states:
Image

The top has everything off.
The middle has "Show hierarchically" enabled, and it allows me to see what icons are on the leaf nodes, even if the branch is closed.
The bottom image has "Show intersection" on, so should I be seeing something different?

On a more general level: Given the "tree" nature of mindmaps, none of the leaves ever "intersect" except where they attach to their common branch. But this is also the point of the "union" -yes?

Both the "Jonny Doe" and the "Thumbs up" leaves have blue folder icons, so is the "In Process" branch the point of intersection? Should there be a blue folder there for the bottom image?

I think that in the last example the intersection is empty because there are no icons common for all three child nodes. Dimitry

Ah yes...

The blue folder icon cross all leaves so it is an "intersection." That makes makes sense.
Thanks guys, for the clarification. :D
