MetaMindMap

Dear Freeplane users,

I posted the following text for Freemind forum and then Dimitry helped me discover Freeplane so I will adapt MetaMindMap for it too.

"As I am a relatively big user of MindMaps and made/enjoy the choice of doing it with FreeMind,
I had quickly, as you I suppose, a lot of MindMaps files on my PC ...

as I am also doing things with DataMining/Knowledge Discovery, I through it could be interesting to get my MindMaps
analysed reusing some algorithms, in order to find links they have and more ... the MetaMindMap

I don't know if it will be helpfull for you too, but as I thanks all contributors for having FreeMind, I have put the result of this tool at http://www.sasw-ch.com/MetaMindMap_gb.html, from where you can download it and then use it as you like."

Salutations

Didier

Hello

Thanks to give me return from problem for your install on Windows 7 .

I don't know where is the problem as we test it for Windows XP and Vista (using the UAC ) and with Avira Antivirus, platforms on which we have actually our development tools.

For your information, as a primary step of analysis, the only activity that I see that could be seen as dangerous by Norton is that if you run MetaMindMap, in the Extensive mode (in Options when you set level of DataMining to Extensive), the program need a connection to an external tool for traduction which is MyMemory, in order to understand your MindMaps in both langages English and French

( If your MindMaps are only in English, you don't need it ; MetaMindMap uses the REST API that has been designed to be as easy as possible to implement and is similar to the Google Translate API; I prefer to use MyMemory because it's a collaborative work of the web community and gives interesting meanings to words that allow DataMing algorithms to be more efficient than with Google traduction API; see http://mymemory.translated.net/ )

If you have another idea of the problem , please do not hesitate to send it to me to see if I can do something for that .

Didier

Didier,

The problem is described here: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/SONAR-is-deleting-programs-with-Norton-360/m-p/423002/message-uid/423002#U423002.

I was able to install after switching SONAR temporary off.

I have included a link to metamindmaps in the wiki Support page http://freeplane.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Support#Links.

Looking forward to the Freeplane version. What is the planning ?

Regards,
Jodi

Didier,

I think if your tool sends any data to the outside locations the data transmission should be cleary documented and explictly accepted by users. At the first their maps could contain confidential or private date which should not be able to leave the computer where they are saved, at the second tools like yours not available as a source code should declare what they do with the user data in order to be trusted.

Therefore I am a bit concerned even if my antivirus did not display any warnings.

Thanks Jodi for the info and the link.

I can control the code inside the software as I developed it for MetaMindMap and for Saepe.ch ( going well since several years) .
If you look at files installed, you will find also .dll , files coming from the development tool I use here which is Windev (see http://www.pcsoft.fr/ )
and which produce reliable code too with free and very efficient database system.

I had made other tests, since last post, with avast! antivirus on Vista to observe what's happening too ...
another similary problem as raised as the one that noticed Jodi ...
avast! propose to install it in a sandbox, and finally nothing is installed ! ;) ... and so if you don't use the sandbox, it's ok.

Dimitry has a good remark too about the problem of asking something to the web for traduction.
I thought to give enough info of what's happening if we use the Extensive mode option, with a message when you fly over this option ...
but it's not enough to be sure that user understands well what's happening and I will bloc the change of mode with a message to be sure
that this choice is well understood and agreed by user before to continue with this option.

(Otherwise, I have another solution that could be to propose to import an already populated dictionnary,
but with the disavantage of being limited in the quantity of traductions and perheaps a little bit heavy for standard user ?)

Didier

That's done in the new release 1.2,

You have the possibility to select Freeplane or FreeMind in the options window.

The user is also well informed before using the mode extensive, which need internet.

Hoping usefull

Didier,
which are the practical limitations of the program. I tried to generate a metamap from the mindmaps held in freeplane.sourceforge.net/mapsOnline. (see Help > Documentation maps Online). After some hours I gave up - the progress bar gave up increasing at about 95%, which was reached after about half an hour.

Hi Jodi

How can I load all those online MindMaps to make a test here ?

(I have been on the online MindMap, load the zip I found but there is few .mm in it
and loading one by one all the .mm found is not very fast )

Just also 2 questions : in the options of MetaMindMap, did you select the option fast for the test with your maps ?
and how many maps do you have (I made tests with about 30 maps) ?

Regards

Didier

Didier,

see enclosed PDF for the following suggestions:

1. See Freeplane icon bar for special icon for “mind map”, unlike butterfly or bee.
2. Links are oversized, both font and length.
3. It would make sense to have the nameMap.mm in the title, and the whole path in the (hidden) details field. (Minimize node).
